Cities — Explore Iran Beyond Politics

Yes, most Iranians live in cities, not the desert. In fact, over 78% of the population is urbanised, and it doesn’t get more urban than Tehran, Iran’s dynamic and relatively liberal capital, home to around 15 million people. Cities such as Mashhad, Isfahan, Tabriz and Shiraz follow, each offering a compelling blend of history and modernity. Yet portrayals of Iranian cities in Western media are often narrow and repetitive - reduced to a handful of mosques, bazaars and political murals. Time, perhaps, to explore a few new backdrops…
